Celebrating British Game Week 2019

A summary of British Game Week: 25th November - 1st December 2019

Great British Game Week kicked off on Monday 25th November to champion game for its culinary versatility, outstanding health benefits and sustainable credentials, and to kick the false stereotype that it is elitist. The week was founded by BASC’s ‘Taste of Game’ and Countryside Alliance’s ‘Game to Eat’ initiatives and is supported by the shooting and food communities. 

On Monday 25th, the BGA team hit the streets of Bristol, serving over 4,000 portions of their commercial game products throughout the day, while speaking to members of the public who have never tried game before, engaging with social influencers and talking to local chefs and restaurants who all came and tried the products. The BGA also had boots on the ground in London, handing out recipe flyers with the nutritional information of different game birds to the public.

The BGA also secured an exciting collaboration with gourmet kebab restaurant: Le Bab, Soho. During the week, customers were able to purchase BGA assured dishes, including Crispy Fried Partridge, Pheasant Shawarma and Grouse Adana. You can read more about this partnership via The Telegraph. The collaboration was so popular, many of the dishes sold out each day and Le Bab are aiming to continue using Pheasant Shawarma on the special’s menu going forward.

Ottolenghi’s Fitzrovia restaurant, ROVI, were also on board for the week by serving BGA-assured dishes, including a crispy mallard duck dish with rye pancakes and a beetroot and apple sauce. Rabbit restaurant treated customers to game dishes including Partridge popcorn with spiced apple sauce and grouse with pickled shitake and berries. Also in London, the Holborn Dining Room served a signature BGA game pie in the main restaurant, along with pheasant fennel sausages on the breakfast menu.

BGA assured Inn, The Dundas Arms in Kintbury held a seasonal game evening on Wednesday 27th November to further celebrate GB Game Week. Guests enjoyed a four-course game dinner party at the Berkshire based inn, which saw an innovative selection of feathered game dishes cooked by the Dundas’ head chef, Lee. From Game Tortellini to Confit Pheasant with Pistachio Mousseline accompanied by paired Liberty wines, the evening finished with a talk from special guest Tom Adams, MD of the BGA, who spoke about the initiative and the progress the Alliance has made so far.

We have to be proactive in conservation and making game meat accessible to everyone.

He continued, “It’s great to have such amazing local produce available to us at The Dundas Arms, such as Berkshire Venison and BGA assured game meat from nearby shoots. Cirrus Inns care deeply for the partnerships we have built with local producers and the produce we serve across our estate. The work the BGA are doing to create a quality assurance scheme for game will really change perceptions for retailers, whilst also promoting the healthy, sustainable qualities to the public.” 

In total, the BGA’s press and online activity reached hundreds of thousands of people over the course of game week, which is fantastic, and we continue to reach the British public through radio, print, social and TV.
