Game Processing Sector is Open for Business this January

The British Game Alliance has been liaising with BGA-registered processors to monitor the game meat market during this challenging end to the season, as we all try to navigate the latest national lockdown.

Despite obvious challenges, the game processing sector is open for business this January with many processors across the UK wanting to take game.

Any shoot with concerns over how to continue to supply the game meat market throughout January should feel free to contact the BGA team on or 0203 727 5204. We can both provide guidance on COVID-safe harvesting while driven game shooting is prohibited and help direct towards an appropriate processor. A full list of BGA-registered processors can be found here.

BGA member shoots are consistently encouraged to maintain regular dialogue with their processors, to help manage the supply of game into the food chain. This is doubly important this month.

These times have not only been tough on our sector, but for many millions of people across the UK. For that reason the BGA is also highlighting the work of our friends at the Country Food Trust, who are using game meat to feed people in need and who are also continuing to source game this January. Further information – including how to donate birds to the Country Food Trust (CFT) – can be found here.

Liam Stokes, BGA Chief Exec said:

“There is a lot of uncertainty out there this month, so it should be reassuring to know the game processing sector is open both for business as usual and for charitable giving through the CFT. The BGA team is on hand to help anyone having difficulties.”

Andy Gray from MC Kelly said:

“We will continue processing and selling game throughout January to the butchers and game pie makers who remain open during this tricky time. We will freeze down game birds to be sold to the hospitality trade once it reopens for locals and visitors to the southwest. The exceptional game meat from this region is part of the reason Devon and Cornwall are such popular tourist destinations. We also sell them online to the public through our nationwide service, The Meatbox Company, along with venison and meats produced within this region.”
