The Royal Berkshire Shooting School

BGA Brand Partner The Royal Berkshire Shooting School talks about the shooting community, event days and their incredible offers

Please could you tell us some of the history of RBSS?

Owned by James Purdey & Sons and founded over 30 years ago, the Royal Berkshire Shooting School, Gun Room and Country Store is based in 100 acres in an area of outstanding natural beauty just an hour from London. Our facilities include eight towers, three Grouse Butts, pattern plates and an infinite number of shooting stands. We host numerous events at the Royal Berkshire as well as simulated days at venues such as Highclere Castle and Englefield House. The Royal Berkshire Sporting Agency organises shoots both in the UK and further afield in Spain, Africa and Argentina.

Put simply, the Royal Berkshire is ‘Shooting at its best’.

By being a brand partner, you are showing your support for the BGA’s efforts. Why do you feel the BGA Assurance Scheme is important to the future of the shooting industry?

The shooting community must be able to demonstrate that it believes in and operates to the highest standards.  The BGA Assurance Scheme is one of the ways that a shoot can ensure it follows best practice which is essential.

Why was it important for your brand to support the BGA?

We are proud to be part of a community that nurtures and enhances the countryside and wildlife.  A key part of shooting is the fact that it provides a sustainable and healthy source of game meat.  The BGA increases awareness of game and ensures a sustainable demand.  It also helps to educate people as to the social, economic and environmental benefits that are delivered by the shooting community.  It does all of this whilst ensuring best practice.

What are the biggest changes you have seen in the shooting industry over the last 5 years?

An increased public awareness and media coverage of game shooting.  We have noticed a greater interest in “game” on menus but this has been countered by a more vocal and passionate opposition to the activity of shooting.  The accessibility of shooting is great but the level of education to those starting to shoot MUST be increased and improved.   The other huge change was the statement of ambition to move away from lead shot in game shooting – this remains a real challenge and one that requires unity across all areas of shooting.

Why do you feel the discount is a benefit to BGA members?

In its most simple terms it saves them money and offers them a wonderful experience at the Royal Berkshire!  But of equal importance it recognises the efforts and contribution of those who are supporting the BGA.

Can you tell us a little bit about your key plans, events and/or any new products for 2022?
